Skim Milk Powder - Europe
Report 19 - Released on May 13, 2021
The Western European skim milk powder price range increased at each end. Prices at each end
set a new 2021 record high. Prices were up in many primary SMP producing countries such as
Germany, France, and Netherlands. Internal EU demand is strong, as is export demand.
The Rhine River route flowing from Switzerland through France, Germany and Netherlands to
Rotterdam and the North Sea remains busy moving SMP into export and between those Western
European countries. Sources affirm that the Port of Rotterdam has mostly gotten back to
normal operations following the Suez Canal closing a few weeks ago.
Orders for scheduled Western European SMP production in coming months are already
significant. Discussion of possible new orders is very active. Deals are regularly closed.
Demand is called lively. Global food and industrial customers for food grade SMP are said to
be very interested in locking in supply commitments.
Relatively higher Oceania SMP prices, as the season there nears the end, is causing more
focus on sourcing in Western Europe, where milk production is near the seasonal peak.
Manufacturers continue to field inquiries about spot sales, as well as contracting for Q3
and Q4 2021. The Western European SMP market is called persistently firm.
